Classic Songs: Eternal Flame – The Bangles

Eternal Flame by The Bangles was a No.1 hit single in nine countries including the USA, UK, Australia, and the Netherlands. Released in January 1989 it was a product of legendary song writing duo of Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, in collaboration with bandmember Susanna Hoffs.

Five Facts

Susanna Hoffs Side Eye was one of the iconic pop looks of the 1980’s.
  1. The ‘Eternal Flame’ title came from a visit the band made to Elvis Presley’s Graceland. In the Garden of Memories there was a plastic box filled with water. When they asked the guide what it was they said “oh that’s the Eternal Flame’. It was supposed to be on all the time but the rain had extinguished it.
  2. Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly also wrote the hit singles – True Colours (Cyndi Lauper), Like a Virgin (Madonna), I’ll Stand by You (The Pretenders), and So Emotional (Whitney Houston).
  3. Susanna Hoffs recorded the song in the studio completely naked after producer Davitt Sigerson pranked her by telling her Olivia Newton-John did her best vocals when she recorded naked.
  4. The success of Eternal Flame helped fuel the break-up of the band when the music media started focussing on Susanna Hoffs and labelled her the lead vocalist, when all bandmembers sang and wrote songs up to that point.
  5. At the initial meeting between the band and the producer to decide on the songs to record for the upcoming album Everything, Hoffs played the demo for Eternal Flame and it was rejected.
