Premier League Preview 2023/24: Manchester United FC

Manchester United FC

Miracle Worker or Tortured Soul in Waiting?

Manchester United seem to be going into another season with ore question marks than answers about their first-choice team, which is so unlike the champion Manchester United teams that we remember watching in the 90’s and 00’s. A club that used to have a clear identity and settled group of star players mixed with exciting youngsters coming through. Going into this season, United have lost their long serving goalkeeper and heartbeat of their team, David De Gea, who left on a free transfer after a successful 12 years at the club. They have replaced him with a big money move for Andre Onana from Inter Milan. In Onana, Manager Erik Ten Hag will feel he finally he can execute his plans to have his side play out from the back wherever possible. Onana is a goalkeeper who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and fancies himself as a playmaker. Fans will have to take the good with the bad with this Cameroonian however as his high risk, high reward style could lead to a few goals from mistakes. United have also splashed out £55m for long term target Mason Mount from Chelsea. Mount played very well over several years at Chelsea but has now left his comfort zone to take on the challenge of helping Manchester United push for their first title since the Sir Alex Fergusson era. In Erik Ten Hag they have a manager capable of achieving that, but the squad need to back him up. They haven’t strengthened their central midfield or full backs positions which were both issues for United last season and is there enough goals in this team to help Rashford up front. This united team has promise and potential but one or two injuries to a thin looking squad this season could derail them badly, especially if Varane or Casemiro go down.
