Railway Health and Safety – Athens, Greece

An interesting health and safety innovation on trains in Athens, Greece – invisible safety hammers to break glass in case of emergency. It wasn’t just one missing, they were all missing. A local chap across the aisle saw me taking a photo and smiled. He summoned his best sarcastic English and declared “Greece – health and safety is No.1”.

I am not sure if the hammers were removed by the train operators or stolen and not replaced. Either way railway safety in Greece is no joke, this photo was taken only a few weeks after the Tempi train crash tragedy further north that clamed the lives of 57 people.
